Mobile-optimized websites are great for people who are always on the go, who don’t have a computer at home or who prefer the mobile interface. Some people, like senior citizens, have grown very used to their mobile phones even though they may not have mastered the art of using computers. So for seniors as well as all the people who fall into the above three categories, mobile optimization is very important. But how exactly do you mobile-optimize your website? What makes a website easy to navigate on a mobile phone?
- Wraparound Text: This is the single most important thing when it comes to mobile-optimizing a website. The text should wrap around so that it fits the size of the mobile phone so that people don’t have to keep scrolling from one side to the other and losing track of what they’re reading. Plus, the font should also be big enough to read on a mobile device.
- Clean Layout: On a computer, you may be able to read content which is placed over an image or content in an unusual font. But when it comes to a mobile phone, these types of innovations are quite useless because the viewer will have a hard time reading them. Instead, it’s best to keep the layout as clean as possible, keep the background white or a very light color and keep the font a simple one like Times New Roman.
- Intuitive Navigation: It should be obvious where the menu to the website is placed so that people can navigate from one page to another without having to figure it out. The use of the word “menu” is itself a good idea rather than coming up with a clever icon to indicate what that person should click on. Icons might look nice on a mobile-optimized website but people may not always understand what they stand for. So be as clear as possible.
